How to Use the 3D Shape Posters
These 3D Shape Posters are a wonderful addition to your preschool classroom walls, daycare and childcare centers, homeschool learning spaces, color recognition activities, early learning centers, bulletin boards, shape vocabulary, and other learning activities, as well as classroom décor.
Preschool teachers can use 3D shape posters as a visual and hands-on tool to introduce young children to solid shapes such as cubes, spheres, cones, cylinders, and rectangular prisms.
Place the posters at children’s eye level so they can refer to them throughout the day, and combine them with real objects and hands-on exploration to help preschoolers connect the visual image of a shape with the real-world objects they see and touch.
Some ways to use the 3D Shape Posters are:
- Circle Time: Keep the posters nearby during morning meeting. Introduce one 3D shape each day. Talk about its name, size, surfaces, and appearance. Use the posters to help children recognize its features, recall its name, and review it regularly.
- Shape Hunt: Ask children to find objects around the classroom that match the shapes on the posters.
- Compare Shapes: Encourage children to compare two shapes by asking questions such as, “How are they alike?” and “How are they different?”
- Hands-On Matching: Provide classroom objects or toy solids and have children match them to the appropriate poster.
- Sorting Activities: Have children sort objects into groups by 3D shape.
- Building Activities: Use blocks and other manipulatives to let children build structures while identifying the 3D shapes they are using.
- Shape Vocabulary: Introduce simple words such as flat, round, curved, surface, edge, and corner as children explore each shape.
- Independent Learning: Place the posters in a math center with blocks, shape manipulatives, and everyday objects for independent exploration.
- Art Connections: Let children create pictures using drawings or cutouts of 3D shapes.
- Movement Games: Call out a 3D shape and have children find the matching poster or classroom object.
- Pair Them with Classroom Décor: Combine the 3D Shape Posters with alphabet posters, number posters, color posters, weather charts, and other learning displays to create an engaging preschool learning environment.
