How to Use the 2D Shape Posters
Teachers can print, display, and use these posters throughout the school year in many fun, hands-on ways to help children recognize, name, compare, and understand basic shapes, building students’ early geometry vocabulary and visual-spatial skills.
Some ways to use the 2D Shape Posters are:
- Shape Recognition: Display shape posters at children’s eye level so they serve as a constant visual reference throughout the school year and help children become familiar with their names and appearances.
- Daily Shape Review: Choose a “Shape of the Day” and spend a few minutes talking about its name, sides, corners, and characteristics.
- Shape Hunts: Place the posters around the classroom and have children search for objects that match each shape. Ask questions such as, “Can you find a triangle?” or “What shape is the clock?” to make learning interactive and meaningful.
- Circle Time: Use the posters during morning meeting to introduce or review shapes with the whole class.
- Sorting Activities: Ask children to sort classroom objects, toys, or picture cards according to the shape shown on the poster.
- Shape Matching: Give children shape cards or toys and have them match each card to the corresponding poster.
- Math Centers: Place the posters in a math or manipulatives center where children can practice identifying and comparing shapes independently.
- Shape Vocabulary: Encourage children to use words such as circle, triangle, square, side, and corner while discussing the posters.
- Art & Crafts: Use the posters as inspiration for shape-based crafts, collages, drawings, and paintings.
- Movement Games: Call out a shape and have children move to the matching poster to create an engaging learning game.
