We are well into summer, and since going to the beach is a favorite activity, it gives you a good opportunity to give your preschoolers this fun and educational Summer Beach Memory Game.

Summer Beach Memory Game

One of the activities that children that preschoolers like a lot are doing memory games.  These types of activities bring a lot of fun to your classroom or home, give your children an opportunity for a friendly competition, are easy to prepare, and are very educational, because they help children pay attention to details to recognize the pairs of cards, improving their visual discrimination, concentration, one-to-one correspondence, focus, and memory skills, which are very useful for their integral development.

For this Summer Beach Memory Game to serve its purpose, I will suggest avoiding frustration and failure in your students, taking into consideration their level of maturity, and pairing children at a similar level and the number of cards that each specific pair of children can handle.  You don’t have to use all of them.  Just remember to always use one pair of each card.

It includes three pages nine cards each and you can find it at the end of this post, so be sure to grab it.

If your preschoolers have being exposed to other memory games, they are probably going to be able to work independently. However, for new students or children who are not familiar with these types of games your guidance.

How to Prepare the Summer Beach Memory Game

It is important that this game’s cards are printed in white cardstock to make them durable and strong, because the children will manipulate them in any kind of way, and you want them to last a long time.  Once you get them ready, you might want to place them in a small basket, a little box, or in a Zip-lock bag, so they can stay together and you don’t lose some of the cards.

To get this Summer Beach Memory Game ready you will need these materials:

Begin by printing two sets of each page using white cardstock. Then cut out and laminate each of the tiles to protect them and make them last longer.  That way you can store the game in a pencil case or a Ziploc bag to protect it and use it year after year.

How to Play the Summer Beach Memory Game

To start, lay out the cards face down in rows and columns so your preschoolers can only see the backside, and invite them to join you for a matching game!

Keep it super simple and start by playing like any traditional memory game, where children take turns selecting two cards to turn over trying to make a match. If a match is made then the preschooler gets to keep the set of cards. If not, then the cards have to be turned back over and the next preschooler takes the turn.

Books About The Beach

If you have read some of my articles, you probably know by now that I am big on using storybooks for everything, and I wanted to include some of my favorite books about summer.

You can find these books at your local library and used book store, but if you want to purchase some to add it to your collection, you can use my Amazon links by clicking on the pictures you want, and that will take you directly to them, to save time.

  • Biscuit’s Day First Beach by Alissa Satin Capucilli.  This book invites children to join this puppy on his first trip to the beach, to make sand castles, collect seashells, and play in the ocean.
  • Pete the Cat at the Beach by James Dean.  This groovy cat finds shells and builds sand castles at the beach. But when it gets too hot,  he’s afraid about the only way to cool off—jumping into the ocean.
  • What Lives in a Shell? by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld.  This clear and appealing book is a fascinating exploration of the many creatures that make a home in a shell, using beautifully accurate illustrations of the many types of shells, inside and out.
  • At the Beach by Shira Evans.  With this book, children will learn all about the beach and the animals that live on it, and introduce them to new words and concepts, helping them expand their understanding of the world.
