Preschoolers are in a stage of development where they need to be introduced to a lot of different types of activities and games to make the learning process enjoyable and age-appropriate. One of the activities that preschoolers like a lot is a memory game.  This type of activity is not only fun and easy to prepare, but also very educational.

To succeed in this type of game children need to put attention to detail to recognize the pairs of cards, which will help them improve their visual discrimination and strengthen their concentration, and focus.  They will also improve the children’s memory when they remember where are the pairs of images to be able to combine them.

Adapting The Easter Memory Game

As a teacher, one of your jobs is to avoid a sense of frustration and failure in your students.  That is why you have to take into consideration their level of maturity. You have to pair children in a similar stage of development and use the number of cards that each specific pair of children can handle.  You don’t have to use all of them.  Just remember to always use one pair of each card.

This memory game will bring a lot of fun to your preschool classroom and will encourage friendly competition among your preschoolers, and while they play they will be working on important skills that will be very useful for their integral development. This printable includes four pages with nine cards each, for a total of 36 colorful cards.  It is completely free and you can find it at the end of this post, so be sure to grab it.

If your preschoolers have been exposed to other memory games, they are probably going to be able to work independently. However, new students or children who are not familiar with these types of games will need your guidance.

How to Prepare the Game

This game’s cards must be durable and strong, because the children will manipulate them in any kind of way, and you want them to last a long time.  Once you get them ready, you might want to place them in a small basket, a pencil case, or a Ziploc bag, so they can stay together and you don’t lose some of the cards.

To get this Easter Memory Game ready you will need these materials:

Begin by printing two sets of each page using white cardstock. Then cut out and laminate each of the cards to protect them and make them last longer. That way at the end of the month you can store the game in a pencil case or a Ziploc bag to protect it and use it year after year.

How to Play the Easter Memory Game

To start, lay out the cards face down in rows and columns so your preschoolers can only see the backside, and invite them to join you for a matching game!

Keep it super simple and start by playing like any traditional memory game, where children take turns selecting two cards to turn over trying to make a match. If a match is made then the preschooler gets to keep the set of cards. If not, then the cards have to be turned back over and the next preschooler takes the turn.

Extension Activities for the Game

These matching cards are so cute that you can use them for other learning games as well.  That way you take advantage of this resource and use it to plan different activities, which will make your life a little easier without having to prep ahead but also will avoid your preschoolers becoming bored.

Some of the uses and activities you can do are:

Language Development: select one of the cards during circle time and invite your preschoolers to create a story using the picture, while you take dictation to make a class book.

Artwork: invite each preschooler to select a card and use it as an inspiration to draw or paint a picture.

The “The Missing Card” Game: this game is better as a small group activity.  Take 3 to 5 cards and place them on a table.  Ask your preschoolers to name the pictures on each card, then have your children close their eyes while you remove one card. Then ask your preschoolers to open their eyes and tell you which card is missing.

Literacy: Literacy development is one of the most important parts of your preschoolers’ overall development because it will create the foundation to make decisions, develop good relationships, learn how to become independent, and do well at school in general.

The activities related to literacy are many since they involve singing, writing, talking, playing rhyming and word games among others, but for me, one of the most important ones is reading, because this activity develops your children’s vocabulary, the ability to pay attention to listen and understand what is being read, to connect sounds and words, to develop pre-writing skills, and to learn about the world around them.

These are some examples of nice Easter music you can use during March, to make sure you tie the rest of your activities with Music and Movement. Remember that this type of activity is not only great for literacy but gross motor development as well. And let’s face it, what kid doesn’t like to have fun singing and dancing, right?
