Importance of Counting and Recognizing Numbers

Children love counting and preschoolers must get used to numbers and practice their counting abilities because that will develop their number sense, which will set up the foundation for other mathematical skills.

Learning how to count is also an essential step in the children’s cognitive development, which will allow them to progressively develop more complex numerical processing.  Counting includes other skills which are recognizing number words and symbols, number word sequence, and enumeration.  Since knowing how to count to 10 is an abstract concept based on memorization, working on number recognition early will help children build their critical thinking skills and confidence.

In addition, using counting to combine and separate groups of objects will help them develop their other math skills such as adding, subtracting, estimating, calculating, and solving mathematical problems in the future.

How to Use These St. Patrick’s Day Count and Clip Cards

These cards can be used in many ways such as:

  • Small group activity
  • Math center option

  • Quiet area option

To prepare this low-prep activity, simply download the file at the end of this post, print them in white cardstock, cut out the cards, and laminate them for durability.  Then, give a child the cards and clothespins.  The child needs to count the objects on each card and place the clothespin on top of the correct number.

This activity is great for strengthening the children’s adding, concentration, number recognition, fine motor, and one-to-one correspondence skills.
