What is a Word Wall

A word wall is simply a collection of words displayed in alphabetical order under big alphabet letters on a large wall, designed to be used by children in an interactive way.  This collection could grow or change with every theme and can be used during different types of learning activities such as chanting, clapping, tracing, spelling, writing, etc.

It is important that these words are written in a large font, be accessible for students to see and use easily, and that teachers referred to them often, so children learn what they say and understand their relevance.

Learning vocabulary words and developing their pre-reading skills sometimes is difficult for many young learners, but, when you give them the opportunity to interact with the vocabulary, they are more likely to remember it.

When to Use the Word Wall Cards

These Endangered Species cards can be used in many ways, and don’t have to be limited to the word wall only.  Some of the ideas I can give you are:

Circle Time
  • Introduce the animals and talk about some of their characteristics.
  • Explain which are mammals, reptiles, birds, and bugs.
  • Clap the animals’ names’ syllables.
  • Discuss which is the first letter of each animal’s name, and what is the sound of that letter.
Math Area
  • Count how many animals are mammals, reptiles, etc.
  • Make a graph with the children’s favorite animals.
Science Area
  • Categorize and sequence from largest to smallest animals.
  • Divide the pictures into different categories (mammals, reptiles, birds, bugs).
  • Categorize the animals into the ones that have no legs, four legs, six legs, or eight legs.
  • Divide them into the ones with fur and without fur.
  • Observe the pictures with magnifying glasses.
  • Compare the pictures with plastic animals.
  • Compare the pictures with the ones in books.
Writing and Literacy Areas
Art Area
  • Draw a picture of an animal.
  • Sculp an animal with playdough.

Informational YouTube Videos

There are many YouTube videos that you can present to your students, to allow them to observe some of these animals in their natural habitat, which otherwise will be difficult for them to see.  Below are some of my favorite endangered species videos:

Related Books

Don’t forget to read to your children every day.  This is one of the activities that are more beneficial to children because books help them feel connected, understand better what you are talking about, and learn vocabulary, among many other important benefits.

There are many books that address endangered species.  You can find books about these interesting animals at your local library, used book store, and on Amazon.  You can get super-fast to this website and to the book you want to add to your collection, by just clicking on the picture that has my direct link.  These are some of my favorite books about endangered species for preschoolers.
