If you looking for an alphabet activity for your preschoolers to do on Christmas week, this fun and pretty hands-on Ornaments Letter Match activity will allow your preschoolers to work on letter recognition and matching uppercase and lowercase letters.

This activity is great to help preschoolers develop their concentration, letter knowledge, one-to-one correspondence, creating sets, eye-hand coordination, and fine motor skills.

Importance of Recognizing Letters

Children must learn how to identify and names and sounds of the letters.  This will help them develop the necessary pre-reading and pre-writing skills to be able to learn how to read and write when they go to Kindergarten.

When a child can recognize and name the letters of the alphabet, that child will be able to say the letters’ sounds, then put sounds together to make syllables, then words, and finally, put words together to form phrases.

Getting Your Activity Ready

This FREE printable can be used in different areas and ways such as:

  • Small group activity.
  • Writing center option.
  • Reading area option.
  • Take home game
  • Quiet area option.

It comes with three pages with nine ornaments each.  Each ornament has a circle in the middle with one of the letters of the alphabet.  There is another page with the same circles and letters.

To prepare for the activity, fill out the form below to download the free printable.  Print each page using white cardstock, then cut out and laminate the ornaments and letter circles, to make them last longer. Place them in a small basket or a Zip-lock bag, to protect them.

How To Use Ornaments Activity

This activity can be played as individuals or with a partner.  To begin, preschoolers will get the basket or Zip-lock bag with the pieces.  They have to identify the letter on each ornament, find the circle that matches that letter, and place it on top of the circle in the ornament.

If your kids are just starting to learn the names of the letters, let them start with just a few ornaments and letters. Then you can then two or three more every time they play.

When your kiddos know all of the letter names, have them say the sound that each letter makes as they match ornaments and letter circles.

Other Ideas

  • You can use this activity as a folder game.  You just have to cut out the ornaments and paste them into a manila folder.  Then cut out the letter circles and place them in a manila envelope or a Zip-lock bag, to keep them safe.
  • You can have the children match the letter on each ornament with magnetic, foam, or wooden uppercase and lowercase letters, to have another option for them to do.
  • They can find words that start with all or some of the letters, and match them with the appropriate ornament.
  • Prepare centers using this one and my other Christmas activities.  You can find them below.

Enhance Their Learning With Books

For me, there is no such thing as too much reading.  The more you read to your children, the better.  It is important to keep them interested in books, changing your library periodically according to the theme and season.

These are some good suggestions you can use for the holidays.  You can find all of these books at your local library, at a used books store, and on Amazon.  You can use the links in each title to get them through my Amazon links, so you can grow your library for years to come.

  • All I Want for Christmas Is Ewe by Ross Rossner.  Combining beautiful illustrations, charming animal puns, and the evergreen message of love, this book is a marvelous way to celebrate the season and share your love for each other.
  • ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas on the Farm by Craig Manning.  In this Christmas picture book for kids, readers will love sharing in the excitement before Santa Claus arrives in this charming twist on the classic holiday story filled with sweet farm animals, delightful rhymes, and beautiful illustrations.
  • The Christmas Wish by Lori Ever.  Long ago, a brave little girl named Anja wanted to be one of Santa’s elves. So she leaves a note for her family and helps her elderly neighbor prepare for the holiday, then she straps on her skis and heads out into the snowy landscape.  A generous trim size, matte cover, extraordinary photographs, and foiled title make this a special book for the holiday season.
  • Little Red Sleigh by Erin Guendelsberger.  This heartwarming book is full of winter joy and Christmas magic and will remind you and your kids that no dream is out of reach if you believe.
  • The Littest Christmas Tree by R. A. Herman.  There are only five days until Christmas, and the Littlest Christmas Tree is still waiting for a home, then, on Christmas Eve, its wish comes true when the man who runs the Christmas tree stand takes it home to his family.
  • A Silly Milly Christmas by Sheri Wall. With plenty of rhyming and repetition, this book is perfect for reading aloud, early learning, and animal lovers everywhere.
