It can be hard to keep your preschoolers focused on learning through the holidays.  Their minds are full of wishes for Santa, vacation, and fun. However, when you provide them with activities that are educational and make them feel like they are just playing like this one, you can keep them engaged in the holiday-based learning process.

Christmas Counting Activities

Preschoolers need to know how to count to ten, to develop the foundation required to do more complex math activities in the future. These Christmas Counting Activities will provide preschoolers with a lot of practice in counting to ten, and improve that necessary skill.

These hands-on activities will keep your children engaged in a fun way that will not overwhelm them, which is the key to helping them develop basic counting skills. These worksheets are perfect because it’s just a matter of printing them out and going! You don’t need to prep them.

In this pack, you will find eight pages divided into four different activities. Each activity has two pages to work on.

Getting the Activity Ready

Print each page using white paper, and give each child one page at a time.  Have them use pencils, crayons, or markers to match or circle the correct numbers.  If you want to use the pages multiple times, print them out in white cardstock and laminate them, or place them in dry-erase pockets, and use dry-erase markers to work on them.

Materials You Will Need:

How to Use These Printables

Since your preschoolers don’t know how to read yet, you will have to give the children one of the pages and instruct them how to use it.  The activities are different, but all of them involve counting.

  • Count and Match:  the children count the presents under the tree and/or on top of the car and trace a line to match the amount with the correct number.
  • Count and Circle:  they will have to count the pictures in each rectangle and circle the correct number.  A different way of doing this activity is using Christmas clothespins to mark the number.
  • Count and Circle:  this activity involves counting the elves on the sleight or the ornaments in the wreaths, and circling the correct number.
  • Count and Write:  they will have to count the Christmas animals in each row and write the correct number in the square.

Benefits of These Activities

These activities will help your preschoolers strengthen their:

  • Counting abilities.
  • Concentration.
  • Number recognition.
  • One-to-one correspondence.
  • Fine motor skills.

Good Books About Christmas

You can never forget to include books in every activity you do and every center you have.  It is one of the most important tools you should have in your arsenal to help your preschoolers’ learning process develop fully.

I always suggest changing your library, centers, and book baskets with great books related to the different seasons and themes. These are some suggestions for good books you can use for the holidays. Most of them can be found at your local library or used bookstore, but you also can order them on Amazon, to add to your collection.
