This sweet handmade Nutcracker Wreath is an easy and inexpensive craft you can make to decorate your door this Christmas Season.

My oldest daughter used to be a ballerina and grew up performing the Nutcracker Ballet every Christmas for several years.   She has so many beautiful memories, that she asked me to make a Nutcracker Wreath for her door since she’s using that theme for her Christmas tree and throughout her house.

This wreath is so easy to make and fun, that you do it in a couple of hours if you feel crafty.

Nutcracker Wreath

I normally order my supplies on Amazon or go to JoAnn and Michaels, but I didn’t have much time.  My daughter lives four and a half hours away from me and she decided to visit this weekend for just two days.  On her way here she called me to let me know that she was on her way, and wanted me to make this wreath for her.

I already had most of the supplies but I did not have the nutcracker.  Since JoAnn and Michaels are not that close by, I decided to go to Big Lots which is about 10 minutes away, just to see.  Alleluia!!! I found several pretty nutcrackers begging me to come home with them.  I bought two packages!

How to Make the Nutcracker Wreath

To make this Nutcracker wreath you are going to need some supplies.  These are the ones I used:

I have the habit to pick several different types of materials that complement each other.  When I start a project, I normally have a design in my mind, but as I start building up the craft I’m working on, some things don’t work or I decided something different because it looks prettier.

In this case, I knew my daughter wanted me to use the colors red, gold, and white, but I always try to add something different for contracting, so I grab some Christmas picks with pine cones.

Steps to Make the Wreath

  • Start by practicing the arrangement of the branches first to get a sense of which placements you’ll need. In my case, I wanted to place the Nutcracker in the bottom middle and leave the wreath form partially uncover, to make it more interesting.
  • Once you decide where you want to place the bow (I wanted to place it on the opposite side of the uncovered portion), pre-place branches at either side of the bow location first, to see how they look and how many you will want to use.
  • When you decide on the placement for the branches, take the first two and tie them with a chenille wire.  Then add two more branches with white berries at either side, to give it contrast.
  • Then, make two bunches with 3 ornaments each and place one on top of each branch.  Once you’re happy with the arrangement tie the bunches with a chenille wire.
  • Continue with the placement of more branches and ornaments bunches, until you are satisfied with the look.  Make sure to slightly overlap the branches as you go around to create a lovely scalloped effect and to cover the wreath form.
  • Take a Nutcracker and tie it at the bottom portion of the wreath behind the branches, using chenille wire.  Make sure it’s straight.
  • For the final step, make a bow combining the different ribbons and tie it to the side, between the two sets of branches.  Then loop a chenille wire in a circular form to the top back of your wreath for hanging.

This wreath turned out better than I even imagined it would, and my daughter and her husband loved it (it’s so great when that happens)! They took it to their house in Miami and hung it on their front door.
