Benefits of This Pack

It is important that your preschoolers have every opportunity they can to recognize the letters of the alphabet, to be able to read later on, using engaging letter-based activities like this one to practice their visual discrimination, fine motor, concentration, and one-to-one correspondence skills, and overall to get familiar with the shape of the letters, in both, lowercase and uppercase versions.

How to Prepare the Zoo Find the Letter Activity Pack

This low-prep pack will only need a few materials, depending on how you want to use this printable and how long you want it to last. Each page shows one of the letters of the alphabet, from A to Z, and a zoo animal whose name starts with that letter. The children will look at the letter feature on top of each page with the page saying: “A is for Alligator”, “B is for Bear”, and so on, and will look for that letter in its uppercase and lowercase versions among all the letters found on that page, and will mark it.

If you just want to reuse the sheets multiple times, print them out on white cardstock, laminate them for durability, and have the children use dot-to-dot markers to mark the uppercase and lowercase versions of the letter on the page.  If you want to save on lamination costs, place the pages inside a dry-erase pocket, and give the children dry-erase markers.

However, for one-time use, be creative and change things around adding a bit of extra fun for your kiddos, you can print them on regular white paper and give the children markers, crayons, pencils, mini erasers, Bingo chips, buttons, fingerpaint, pom poms, or any other small manipulative that you think is appropriate to mark the letters.

Zoo Animals Storybooks

If you have read some of my posts you might know that I’m big on using storybooks in the classroom, with every theme, and it is essential to place books in most of the centers.

Just by showing your children the pictures of a book and letting them create the story in their minds and talking about them, you are modeling how to hold a book the right way and turn the pages gently, how you read from top to bottom and left to right (the way you also write correctly).

Children adore stories and that special time you spend reading to your children will help them build a beautiful relationship with them, but also will help them develop important pre-reading and pre-writing skills that will be essential later on in kindergarten.

These are some zoo animal books that you can use:

  • Zoo Time by D. S. Park.  This book uses stunning illustrations to bring the zoo’s animals to life.
  • The View at the Zoo by Kathleen Long Bostrom.  With a clever twist and a new, sturdy board book format, this book will have children begging for a trip to the zoo to see the animals in person.
  • 1, 2, 3 to the Zoo by Eric Carle.  This book combines simple counting with unusual illustrations of animals. counting.
  • I Want to Be a Zookeeper by Dan Liebman.  This book is a realistic insight into the working day of a zookeeper, using color photographs, to help children understand what’s involved in this job, learn to respect the importance of doing a job well, and appreciate the contributions these workers make in the zoo animal lives.
  • It’s a Crazy Day at the Zoo by Stacey Lee Doyle.  This is an exciting and entertaining tale designed to captivate the imaginations of children.
  • Lou’s Zoo and Winston Too by JoAnn M. Dickinson.  This book beautifully illustrates the value of embracing our differences and accepting one another just as we are, using lovable zoo animals, each with their unique personalities.
  • A Visit to the Zoo by Blake A. Hoena.  The text and photographs in this book take children on a visit to the zoo including descriptions of the things, people, and animals found there.
