If you’re looking for an alphabet activity for your preschoolers during Christmas week, this fun and hands-on Ornaments Letter Match activity will allow them to work on letter recognition and matching uppercase and lowercase letters.
This Ornaments Letter Match activity has three pages with nine ornaments each. Each ornament has a circle in the middle with one of the letters of the alphabet. There is another page with the same circles and letters. You can find it at the end of this post.
Importance of Recognizing Letters
Children must learn how to identify the names and sounds of letters. This will help them develop the necessary pre-reading and pre-writing skills to learn how to read and write when they go to Kindergarten.
When a child can recognize and name the letters of the alphabet, that child will be able to say the letters’ sounds, combine sounds to make syllables, then words, and finally, combine words to form phrases.

How to Prepare and Use the Ornaments Letter Match Activity
This activity is easy to prepare for. You will only need a handful of materials, which are:
- Ornaments Letter Match pack (found at the end of this post.)
- Printer.
- White cardstock.
- Scissors.
- Laminator or Dry-erase pockets.
- Small basket or Ziploc bag.
Then, fill out the form below to download and print out the free printable. Print each page using white cardstock, then cut out and laminate the ornaments and letter circles to make them last longer. Please place them in a small basket or Ziploc bag to protect them.
This activity can be played individually or with a partner. To begin, preschoolers will get the basket or Ziploc bag with the pieces. They have to identify the letter on each ornament, find the circle that matches that letter, and place it on top of the circle in the ornament.
If your kids are starting to learn the names of the letters, allow them to begin with just a few ornaments and letters. Then you can have two or three more every time they play.
When your kiddos know all the letter names, have them say each letter’s sound as they match ornaments and letter circles.
Other Ideas
- This activity can be used as a folder game. First, cut out the ornaments and paste them into a manila folder. Then, cut out the letter circles and place them in a manila envelope or a Ziploc bag to keep them safe.
- You can have the children match the letter on each ornament with magnetic, foam, or wooden uppercase and lowercase letters to have another option for them to do.
- They can find words that start with all or some of the letters and match them with the appropriate ornament.
- Prepare centers using this one and my other Christmas activities. You can find them below.
Enhance Their Learning With Books
For me, there is no such thing as too much reading. The more you read to your children, the better. It is vital to keep them interested in books, changing your library periodically according to the theme and season.
These are some excellent suggestions for the holidays. You can find all of these books at your local library, at a used books store, and on Amazon. Use the links in each title to get them through my Amazon links so you can grow your library for years to come.
