World Farm Animal Day is October 2nd, and these Farm Beginning Sounds Clip Cards are the perfect letter identification and beginning sounds activity for that day.  It is also a good resource to add to your farm animals’ theme.

This free literacy activity includes four pages with six cards, using real pictures for a total of 24 cards, and you can download it at the end of this post.

The best way to teach the alphabet is through fun, hands-on activities that keep children engaged and interested.  These clip cards are easy to use and help preschoolers develop fine motor skills as they press the clothespins to mark the correct letters.

How to Use the Farm Beginning Sounds Clip Cards

These Farm Beginning Sounds Clip Cards can be used in many ways, such as:

  • Small group activity
  • Literacy center option
  • Writing center activity
  • Take-home activity.
  • Quiet area option.

Give the child the cards and clothespins.  The child needs to say the name of the object on each card and place the clothespin on the correct letter that represents the sound.

This activity strengthens children’s phonemic awareness, literacy, letter recognition, fine motor skills, and one-to-one correspondence.

Materials Needed

Optional:  dry-erase markers, mini erasers, counters, buttons, or mini pompoms, for younger preschoolers who might find using the clothespins difficult.  You don’t want them to feel frustrated and avoid doing the activity.

How to Set Up

Print the clip cards on white card stock.  Cut them apart and laminate them for multiple uses. Place them on a tray or in a basket with clothespins, and invite your preschoolers to join you in naming the pictures and finding the beginning-sound letters.

I like to make several sets and place them in different centers to entice the children and allow them to use this activity in different ways.

It is best to introduce the clip cards to your preschoolers and explain how to use them first.

To extend the activity, you can:

  • Have the children trace or copy the letters.
  • Match each letter with plastic or foam letters.

Farm Storybooks

Always add quality storybooks to enhance any preschool theme, and read them to your students during circle time and/or storytime.  Here are some of my favorite farm books that pair nicely with these farm beginning sounds clip cards. You can find them at your local library, used bookstore, and on Amazon by following my affiliate links and clicking the titles.

  • Tractors Found on the Farm by Wordplay Groundhog.  Using cute rhymes and farm illustrations, this fun storybook uses simple sentences and silly tractor pictures that include farm animals, barns, and classic agriculture scenery.
  • This Book is a Farm by Lenna Grey.  Kids will love becoming part of the story as they tackle interactive farm chores.
  • Cows Can Moo! Can You? All About Farms by Bonnie Worth.  Ideal for kids who love animals and machines, this is a perfect choice for families making their first visit to a farm or petting zoo, or for explaining where food comes from.
  • Amara’s Farm by Ja-Nay Brown Wood.  The playful text guides young readers to hunt for visual clues and compare and contrast the unique characteristics of pumpkins against okra, cauliflower, eggplant, and other produce that grows on Amara’s farm.
  • Counting Animals on the Farm by Goodzilla Books.  A perfect book for little students learning to count from 1 to 10, fun and easy, with our animals.
  • Mrs. Wishy-Washy’s Farm by Joy Cowley.  This funny story talks about Duck, Cow, and Pig running away from Mrs. Wishy-Washy to the big city, where they get lost, wander into a restaurant, and even stumble into a hardware store and get covered in paint!
