One of the family’s favorite activities during Summer is going to the beach, right? And when they go, children love to use pails and shovels and play in the sand. Inspired by this, I created a low-prep Beach Pail Letter Match that you can use at home or in preschool centers like the one I run, which don’t close during summer.
Summer is here, and with it, the hurricane season has begun here in Florida. Regardless of this situation and the scare we all feel every year, this season is for children to have fun, “recharge their batteries,” and play inside and out.

The Beach Pail Letter Match pack comes with eight pages with pails in three different colors, one for each uppercase letter of the alphabet, and five pages with coordinated pails, one for each lowercase letter of the alphabet. You can get it at the end of this post.
Beach Pail Letter Match
This Beach Pail Letter Match activity strengthens children’s fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, concentration, letter knowledge, one-to-one correspondence, and set-creation skills.
When a child has the ability to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet, that child can distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters. After that, the child will start to say the letter sounds, then put sounds together to make syllables, later words, and finally put words together to form phrases.

You can use it in many ways, such as small group activities, literacy and writing centers, take-home games, and the Quiet area option.
This low-prep activity only needs a few materials to put together, which are:
- Free Beach Pail Letter Match printable (found at the end of this post)
- Printer
- White cardstock
- Laminator
- Laminator pouches
- Scissors
- Small basket or Ziploc bag
To prepare for the Beach Pail Letter Match activity, fill out the form below to download your free printable. Print each page using white cardstock, then cut out and laminate the pails and shovels to make them last longer. Place them in a small basket or a Ziploc bag to protect them.
How To Use The Beach Pail Letter Match Activity

This activity can be played individually or with a partner. To begin, have your preschoolers gather the pails and shovels and identify the letter on each one as they match the uppercase letter in each pail with the lowercase letter in each shovel.
If your kids are just starting to learn letter names, start with just a few sets of pails and shovels. Then add two or three more each time they play.
When your kiddos know all of the letter names, have them say the sound that each letter makes as they match pails and shovels.
Other Ideas:
- You can use this activity as a folder game. You only have to cut out the pails and paste them into a manila folder. Then cut out the shovels and place them in an envelope or a Ziploc bag to keep them safe.
- You can have the children match the letter with magnetic, foam, or wooden letters for another option.
- Prepare centers using this activity and my other Summer activities, such as the Summer Count and Clip Cards, Summer Rhyming activity, and Summer Math Puzzles, to give children variety and choices.
Enhance Their Learning by Reading Books
If you have been on my site before, you may know how important I consider books. Reading is one of my favorite things, not just for myself, but also for my kiddos.
Gather fiction and non-fiction books about Summer to support the theme. You can find many beautiful ones at your local library, in a used bookstore, or on Amazon. Below are some of my favorites. Clicking on the pictures will take you directly to Amazon, through my affiliate links.
- A Summery Saturday Morning by Margaret Mahy is a story about a group of children, dogs, a cat, and a gaggle of geese enjoying a summery Saturday morning, even though things don’t go quite as planned.
- The Seashore Book by Charlotte Zolotow brings to life a day at the beach imagined by a boy and his mother as they hunt for seashells and build sandcastles during a perfect summer.
- Water by Frank Asch encourages young readers to appreciate water in its many forms.
- Mouse’s First Summer by Lauren Thompson is a story about two mice that invite the reader to celebrate summer with a picnic in the park and have fun rolling down the hill on tickly green grass, flying kites, and enjoying some juicy watermelon.
- Summer (Four Seasons) by Nuria Roca, with large, beautiful color illustrations, will love having the simply written, descriptive text read to them as they gaze at the charming pictures, which evoke the moods and activities of summer.
- The Summer Visitors by Karel traces the interactions between a family of bears and a human family during their summer stay at a lake cottage, told primarily through illustration, with only a few dozen words.
- Carl’s Summer Vacation by Alexandra Day is a sweet story about a dog and a girl who take advantage of their parents’ distraction to canoe, pick blackberries, and enjoy a picnic.
- How I Spent My Summer Vacation by Mark Teague is the story about a boy who was carried off by cowboys and taught the ways of the West–from riding buckin’ broncos to roping cattle. Perfect for a back-to-school read-aloud, here’s a Western fantasy with sparkling illustrations and enough action to knock kids’ boots off!
- The Night Before Summer Camp by Natasha Wing tells the story of a little girl and her family as they get ready for vacation, and it ends with a funny ending everyone will enjoy.
- Ready for Summer by Marthe Jocelyn explores the question, “What am I going to wear?” first presented in the toddler years, when mastering getting dressed is a triumph and opinions about clothing are emphatic.
