Farmers Day Bingo for Preschoolers

Many preschoolers have little knowledge about a farm, what is the farmers’ job, and what farm animals. Some might not have seen a farm animal in person. Most of them might be more familiar with zoo animals because they get to go and visit them, but that doesn’t mean that they cannot learn things about a farm.
Farmers Day is celebrated on October 12, and I think it’s a good opportunity to help them establish a little connection to a farm and farm animals, in a way that will guarantee will keep them engaged and motivated.
Since children love playing games, it is a good strategy to use this advantage to get them involved and excited about learning. One of the games that they love is bingo. This Farmers Day Bingo is simple and fun, but it will also help your preschoolers learn about the different animals that can be found on a farm, and some of the things you can find in one.
Before I introduce them to the game, I will recommend reading a book and using the bingo cards as props to talk to them about what the pictures show, their importance to the farmers, and the daily activities on the farm.
Farmers Bingo Game
This bingo printable includes two different versions with 6 mats each, one version for younger learners and another one for more advanced learners. The simpler version includes 6 mats with 9 pictures each. The advanced version also includes six mats but with 24 pictures each. I also included 90 picture cards to show the children which pictures they could mark on their bingo cards.
You can use this game as a large group activity, but also it is perfect to use it in combination with my FREE Farm Beginning Sounds Clip Cards activity, for variety and a more complete teaching process, but also to create different stations where the children can rotate through.
If your preschoolers have been exposed to other bingo games, they are probably going to be able to work independently. However, new students or children who are not familiar with these types of games will need your guidance.
That is why I created two different sets. That way you will decide which kiddos to group according to their level, so they feel happy to play and successful, not frustrated. Otherwise, that experience will result in a negative one and you won’t be able to accomplish what you are trying to do.
Benefits of this Bingo Game
Like any other bingo game, the Farmers Day Bingo is not just a fun game but is also educational. Some of the most important benefits are:
- Concentration and memory skills development – because they need to focus to get it right.
- One-to-one correspondence – when they have to match the picture you are showing them with a similar picture on their bingo cards.
- Sensory development – because they are using some of their senses when they hear and see the card you are showing, and touch, feel, and manipulate objects.
- Eye and hand coordination – when they see the picture and place the bingo chip in the appropriate square.
- Social skills – when they take turns and communicate with other players.
- Fine motor skills development – when they move their hands and fingers while playing the game.
- Visual discrimination – when they look at the pictures and can match them with the one in their cards.
- Fine motor development – moving their hands and fingers while they play.
- One-to-one correspondence skills – when matching what they see with what they do.
Materials for the Farmers Day Bingo
You don’t need a lot of materials, just these:
- free Farmers Day Bingo cards (you can find this at the bottom of this post.)
- Printer.
- White cardstock
- Scissors.
- Markers (these could be farm mini erasers, bingo chips, buttons, mini pom poms, and anything other material small enough that can fit in the bingo cards’ squares).
- Laminator machine and laminator pouches, or
- Dry-erase sleeves
How to Prepare the Farmers Day Bingo
The process is extremely easy. The only thing you need to do is print the bingo mats and cards on white cardstock. Then cut them out and laminate them. I strongly suggest you do that to protect the cards from wear and tear and have them available for your students to play over and over again.
If you want to save on lamination costs, you can stick the mats inside a dry-erase sleeve, but you will probably want to laminate the cards regardless.
Playing the Game
To start, each child chooses a bingo mat. The teacher or one student (if they are playing as a small group activity) should place the picture cards in a basket, bag, or any other container. Then the teacher or child takes a random card out and shows it to the children, and whoever has that picture on his/her bingo mat should place a farm mini eraser, bingo chip, button, or mini pom-poms on top of it.
For the simpler version, the children just have to match the picture. For the most advanced version, the children have to match the letter and the picture.
The child who fills up an entire row (which could be horizontal, vertical, or diagonal) and yells Bingo!!! wins. If the child is distracted and doesn’t shout Bingo! before another one does, he/she loses. To extend the game you can have the winner be the first to fill out their whole card.
I like that this game not only could be played in the classroom or at home but also could be played by preschoolers but also by older children such as kindergarteners and elementary children as well. Why not? Is such a matter of having fun.
