Pumpkin Ten Frame Counting for Preschoolers

This FREE, simple, versatile, hands-on Pumpkin Ten Frame Counting activity will help preschoolers truly understand numbers 0 to 10 and how to use them, building their mathematical thinking.
This set includes four pages of matching cards, with three pairs each, for a total of 12 designs.
Pumpkin Ten Frame Counting Activity
When children have a strong foundation in number sense, they begin to understand how numbers relate to ten, how to add them to reach ten, how to divide them to get smaller numbers, and how 10 connects to larger numbers. This is an essential skill because the entire number system is built around ten, and understanding it helps children develop mathematical thinking and prepares them for later concepts such as addition and subtraction.
This powerful Pumpkin Ten Frame Counting activity provides preschoolers a visual, concrete way to understand abstract numbers and develop essential skills such as:
- Number Sense – Ten frames help students see numbers as groups rather than just counting one by one or memorizing numerals, because they provide a visual clue about how big or small a number is by showing how many squares are filled.
- Visual Discrimination & Problem-Solving – When students visualize numbers on a ten-frame, they can start solving problems in their heads instead of counting on their fingers.

How to Get the Activity Ready
To get these cards ready, you only need a handful of materials, which are:
- FREE Pumpkin Ten Frame printable (found below).
- Printer.
- White paper or cardstock.
- Laminator and laminating sheets.
- Scissors or paper cutter.
Print the pages, cut them out, and laminate them for durability. Have the children match the colorful pictures to their black-and-white mirrors. You can also use these cards to play a memory-matching game by having the children place them face down and try to find matching pairs.
Consider your children’s different developmental levels and use all or fewer cards accordingly.
