These Valentine’s Beginning Sound Clip Cards are perfect to help your preschoolers develop their literacy skills further, during February, because they will strengthen the children’s phonological awareness, letter recognition, literacy, fine motor, and one-to-one correspondence skills.

The best way to teach the alphabet is using fun hands-on activities, that keep children engaged and interested.  These clip cards are easy to use and they also help preschoolers develop their fine motor skills when they press the clothing pins or use the dry erase markers to mark the correct letters.

What to Do

To prepare this activity you will need the following materials:

How to Set It Up

Print the clip cards on white cardstockCut them apart and laminate them for multiple uses. Place them on a tray or basket with some clothespins or dry erase markers and invite your preschoolers to name some of the pictures and find the beginning sound letters.

I like to make several sets and place them in different centers, to entice the children and allow them to use this activity in different ways.

It is better to introduce the clip cards to your preschoolers and explain to them how to use the cards.

You can even use the cards during circle time to review the name of the objects that appear in each of them, and review the letter name and sounds as well before you let them adventure on their own.

How to Use the Activity

Give the child the cards and clothespins or dry erase markers.  The child needs to name the objects in the card and place a clothespin or use the dry erase marker to mark the letter that represents the beginning sound of the name of that object.

I like to give my preschoolers options.  That is why many times I combine an activity with different related ones, to set up multiple small group activities that run at the same time.  It will depend on your particular group.

If you are interested in setting multiple groups, check my other Valentine activities at the bottom of this post.  They all come with FREE printables ready for you.

Extension Activities

To extend the activity you can:

  • Add in small manipulatives such as mini erasers, gems, pom-poms, buttons, and any other material to have the child mark the beginning sound using manipulatives instead.
  • Have the child trace or copy the letters.
  • Match each letter with magnetic, foam or wooden letters.
  • Find other words that start with the same sound.

Valentine’s Storybooks

It is always important to add some quality storybooks to enhance any preschool theme, and to read them to your students during circle time and/or storytime.  Here are some of my favorite Valentine’s books that could be nicely paired with these beginning sounds clip cards.
