Mother’s Day Beginning Sounds Clip Cards

This is one of the hands-on activities that I truly like to teach the beginning sounds because it keeps preschoolers focused and helps develop their fine motor skills when they press the clothespins to mark the correct letters.

For younger preschoolers or children with disabilities who might find very challenging the use of clothespins, you can let them use dryerase markers, mini erasers, Bingo chips, or any other small manipulative instead.

These cards can be used as a small group activity, take-home practice, and choices for Literacy, Writing, and Quiet areas.  They are also perfect to be combined with my other Mother’s Day activities, to give your preschoolers different choices.

You can combine them with other Mother’s Day activities. They all come with free printables.  If you don’t have them yet, grab them by clicking on the links below.

Setting Up the Mother’s Day Beginning Sound Clip Cards Activity

To put this low-prep activity together you only need to print out the pages in white cardstock, cut out the cards, and laminate them for durability.  Place them on a tray or basket with some clothespins, and invite your preschoolers to name some of the pictures, find the beginning sound letters, and place a clothespin on top of the correct letter that represents the sound.

Since some of the pictures might be a little confusing, I added cards with words, to help you guide them, and also as an additional pre-reading activity for those children that are most advanced.

You can also use the cards during circle time to introduce the names of the objects that appear in each of them and review the letter name and sound as well before you let them adventure on their own.

Always remember the developmental level of each of your preschoolers.  If they are not ready, don’t give them all the cards at a time, to avoid frustration.

This type of activity is great for strengthening the children’s phonemic awareness, literacy, letter recognition, concentration, vocabulary fine motor, and one-to-one correspondence skills.

Mother’s Day Storybooks

I know, I know… I sound like a broken record, but I cannot avoid talking about the importance of reading quality storybooks to your children.  Since I like to change my library and book baskets according to the theme or occasion, here are some of my favorite Mother’s Day books that could be nicely paired with these beginning sounds clip cards.

You can find them at your local library, used book store, or Amazon.  For your convenience, I added my affiliate links to each of the pictures.  You just have to click on your favorites and that will bring you to the Amazon website in seconds.

  • I Love You Forever by Robert Munsch.  This is my favorite Mother’s Day book.  Is the story of a mother that has a baby boy that she takes care of until is his turn to return the love.
  • Is Your Mama a Llama? By Deborah Guarino.  This book uses riddle rhymes and six lovable baby animals to help Lloyd the llama discover just what kind of animal his mama is.
  • Just Me and My Mom by Mercer Meyer.  Little Critter is spending a special day with his mom in this classic, funny, and heartwarming story.
  • The Night Before Mother’s Day” by Natasha Wing.  It’s the night before Mother’s Day, and Dad and the kids are determined to show Mom just how much they love her.
  • Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman, is the story of a baby bird who goes in search of his mother, but not knowing what she looks like makes it a challenge. The timeless message of the bond between mother and child makes this precious book a treasure.
  • Clifford’s Happy Mother’s Day by Norman Bridwell talks about how Emily Elizabeth is gathering together some surprises for her mom: candy, flowers, and a card she’ll make herself for Mother’s Day, and how Clifford accidentally knocks over the ink and tracks pawprints over the card and Emily’s sweater!
  • T. Rex and the Mother’s Day Hug by Lois G. Grambling.  Mother’s Day is here, and T. Rex wants to plan something extra special for his mama. He wants to do something instead of just giving something. T. Rex is sure he has a perfect gift idea, but will Mama Rex love it, too?
