What is a Word Wall

A word wall is simply a collection of words displayed in alphabetical order under large letters on a large wall, designed for children to use interactively.  This collection could grow or change with each theme and can be used in various learning activities, such as chanting, clapping, tracing, spelling, writing, etc.

It is important that these words are written in a large font, are accessible for students to see and use easily, and that teachers refer to them often, so children learn what they say and understand their relevance.

Learning vocabulary words and developing their pre-reading skills can be difficult for many young learners, but when you give them opportunities to interact with the vocabulary, they are more likely to remember it.

When to Use the Word Wall Cards

These Endangered Species cards can be used in many ways and don’t have to be limited to the word wall.  Some of the ideas I can give you are:

Circle Time
  • Introduce the animals and talk about some of their characteristics.
  • Explain which are mammals, reptiles, birds, and bugs.
  • Clap the animals’ names’ syllables.
  • Discuss which is the first letter of each animal’s name, and what is the sound of that letter.
Math Area
  • Count how many animals are mammals, reptiles, etc.
  • Make a graph with the children’s favorite animals.
Science Area
  • Categorize and sequence the animals from largest to smallest.
  • Divide the pictures into different categories (mammals, reptiles, birds, bugs).
  • Categorize the animals into those that have no legs, four legs, six legs, or eight legs.
  • Divide them into those with fur and those without.
  • Observe the pictures with a magnifying glass.
  • Compare the pictures with plastic animals.
  • Compare the pictures with those in the books.
Writing and Literacy Areas
Art Area
  • Draw a picture of an animal.
  • Sculp an animal with playdough.

Informational YouTube Videos

There are many YouTube videos you can present to your students to allow them to observe some of these animals in their natural habitats, which would otherwise be difficult for them to see.  Below are some of my favorite endangered species videos:

Books About Endangered Species

Don’t forget to read to your children every day.  This is one of the activities that is more beneficial to children because books help them feel connected, better understand what you are talking about, and learn vocabulary, among many other important benefits.

There are many books that address these endangered species.  You can find books about these interesting animals at your local library, used bookstore, and on Amazon.  You can get to this website and the book you want to add to your collection super-fast by just clicking the picture with my direct link.  These are some of my favorite books about endangered species for preschoolers.

  • Endangered Animals by KeriAnne N. Jelinek is an informative and educational book that uses beautiful pictures and descriptions to delve into the lives of 20 of the world’s most endangered species.
  • Our Planet’s Most Endangered Wildlife by Kesem Books focuses on ten of the planet’s most critically endangered animals, with stunning illustrations and a wealth of information, introducing these remarkable creatures and the challenges they face.
