Father’s Day Beginning Sounds Clip Cards

This is one of the hands-on activities that I like to use for the beginning sound identification because I notice children like them and keep them focused.

For younger preschoolers or children with disabilities who might find very challenging the use of clothespins, you can let them use dry-erase markers, mini erasers, Bingo chips, or any other small manipulative instead.

These cards can be used as a small group activity, take-home practice, and choices for Literacy, Writing, and Quiet areas.  They are also perfect to be combined with my other Father’s Day activities, to give your preschoolers different choices.

All of my Father’s Day activities come with free printables.  If you don’t have them yet, grab them by clicking on the links below.

Setting Up the Father’s Day Beginning Sound Clip Cards

To put this low-prep activity together you only need to print out the pages in white cardstock, cut out the cards, and laminate them for durability.  Place them on a tray or basket with some clothespins, and invite your preschoolers to name some of the pictures, find the beginning sound letters, and place a clothespin on top of the correct letter that represents the sound.

You can even use the cards during circle time to introduce the names of the objects that appear in each of them and review the letter name and sound as well before you let them adventure on their own.

Always remember the developmental level of each of your preschoolers.  If they are not ready, don’t give them all the cards at the same time, to avoid frustration.

This type of activity is great for strengthening the children’s letter identification and beginning sound recognition for this holiday.  These cards are easy to use and will help preschoolers develop their fine motor skills when they press the clothespins to mark the correct letters, as well as strengthen the children’s concentration, vocabulary, phonemic awareness, literacy, and one-to-one correspondence.

Father’s Day Storybooks

Reading storybooks to your children might be one of the most important educational activities you can do, and I always recommend changing the library and book baskets according to the theme or occasion.  Here are some of my favorite Father’s Day books that could be nicely paired with these beginning sounds clip cards.

You can find them at your local library, used book store, or Amazon.  For your convenience, I added my affiliate links to each of the titles.  You just have to click on your favorites and that will bring you to the Amazon website in seconds.

  • I Love You, Daddy by Jillian Harker and beautifully illustrated by Kristina Stephenson.  Little Bear is ready for some grown-up adventures – at least, Daddy Bear thinks so. But they soon discover that Little Bear needs a helping hand.
  • Following Papa’s Song by Gianna Marino a heartwarming story filled with the wonders of the ocean and the comfort of a father’s presence, to be read again and again.
  • Just Me and My Dad by Mercer Mayer tells the story of Little Critter and his dad going on a camping trip, where they enjoy canoeing, fishing, or building a campfire.  A perfect read for Father’s Day . . . or any day!
  • Because I’m Your Dad by Ahmet Zappa uses a text that’s both playful and loving to express a father’s hopes and dreams for a one-of-a-kind relationship with his child. Whimsical monster characters bring the silly and sweet scenes to life and keep the book universal.
  • Daddy Is My Hero by Dawn Richards is a fitting tribute to every child’s first real-life Superman…their dad.  From capturing and locking up outlaws to battling greedy dragons, and putting monsters to sleep with a wizard’s spell, there’s no end to the amazing feats of strength and ingenuity that his father can do! With clever rhyming text and adorably detailed illustrations,
  • A Perfect Father’s Day by Ever Bunting is a cute book that talks about a little girl called Susie taking her dad to a restaurant, for a special day filled with treats for both of them! When they get back home, Mom’s final surprise is a perfect ending for the perfect day.
  • When Dads Don’t Grow Up by Marjorie Blain Parker is a playful story about four father-child pairs as they spend happy, silly times together, popping bubble wrap watching cartoons, and taking part in shopping cart races.
