This Valentine’s Beginning Sound Clip Cards pack includes three pages with six cards each. It is available at the end of this post.

The best way to teach the alphabet is through fun, hands-on activities that keep children engaged and interested. These clip cards are easy to use and help preschoolers develop fine motor skills when pressing the clothing pins or using dry-erase markers to mark the correct letters.

To prepare this activity, you will need the following materials:

Print the clip cards on white cardstockCut them apart and laminate them for multiple uses. Place them on a tray or basket with clothespins or dry-erase markers, and invite your preschoolers to name some pictures and find the beginning sound letters.

I like to make several sets and place them in different centers to entice the children and allow them to use this activity in various ways.

It is better to introduce the clip cards to your preschoolers and explain how to use them. You can even use the cards during circle time to review the names of the objects in each one and the letter names and sounds before you let them explore on their own.

How to Use the Activity

I like to give my preschoolers options.  That is why, many times, I combine an activity with different related ones to set up multiple small group activities that run simultaneously.  It will depend on your particular group.

Give the child the cards and clothespins or dry-erase markers. The child needs to name the objects on the cards and place a clothespin or use the dry-erase marker to mark the letter representing the beginning sound of that object’s name.

To set up multiple groups, check my other Valentine’s activities at the bottom of this post.  They all come with FREE printables ready for you.

Extension Activities

To extend the activity, you can:

  • Add manipulatives such as mini erasers, gems, pom-poms, buttons, and any other material to have the child mark the beginning sound using manipulatives instead.
  • Have the child trace or copy the letters.
  • Match each letter with magnetic, foam, or wooden letters.
  • Find other words that start with the same sound.

Adding quality storybooks to enhance any preschool theme and reading them to your students during circle time and/or storytime is always important. Here are some of my favorite Valentine’s books that could be nicely paired with these beginning sounds clip cards.

These are some good suggestions for Valentine’s Day. You can find all of these books at your local library, at a used books store, and at Amazon. Use the links in each picture to get them through my Amazon links so you can grow your library for years to come.
