Pumpkin Life Cycle for Preschoolers

A typical fall-related fruit is the pumpkin, and this FREE Pumpkin Life Cycle activity is perfect for the entire season, tying in with the Halloween and Thanksgiving themes as well.

Pumpkin Life Cycle for Preschoolers

As I mentioned before, when you teach your preschoolers about life cycles, you are addressing multiple domains, bringing many benefits to the children, as this process helps them learn essential concepts that will then foster the development of numerous necessary skills. Among the concepts they know, we can mention the following:

Scientific Concepts: Learning about different life cycles teaches children the fundamental process of how living things are born, grow, and reproduce to create other beings, the connection that exists between living things in nature, and several scientific terms such as growth, change, transformation, reproduction, metamorphosis, etc.

Language and Vocabulary: The stages in different life cycles have specific names that increase their vocabulary, and also encourage them to communicate their ideas and discuss their observation.

Problem-solving Development: Observing the natural world and phenomena helps children learn how living things are born, grow, and change over time, fostering in them the ability to identify the different stages of a life cycle.

Sequencing and Memory: Children learn the order (beginning, middle, and end) in which the different stages of a life cycle occur.

Comparison: Learning about different life cycles gives children the opportunity to compare one life cycle with another, to identify similarities and differences.

Fine and Gross Motor Development: This type of teaching-learning process involves activities such as drawing, labeling, organizing, walking, running, observing, planting seeds, and others, which help children develop crucial skills.

Social-Emotional Development: Children develop an appreciation and understanding of the natural world, create an awareness of things to compare their own growth with that of another living thing, respect for other humans, animals, and plants, and the importance of protecting and preserving the environment and all its inhabitants.

How to Prepare and Use the Pumpkin Life Cycle Pack

This activities requires very little prep work. You will only need:

The Pumpkin Life Cycle pack, found at the end of this post.
A printer.
White cardstock.
Laminator and laminating sheets.
Scissors.
Optional: pumpkin life cycle felt set.

To prepare it, print all the pages on white cardstock. Cut out and laminate everything to keep them available for years to come.

I will recommend printing out multiple copies and placing them in different centers. That way, you will entice and encourage more preschoolers to use them as they rotate to the other centers, such as the Science area, small group table, Math center, Writing center, and Quiet area, or even use them as a take-home activity.

Before you offer your preschoolers the activities, explain to them the stages of the pumpkin life cycle. I’ve included real photographs in the pack, which you can use for staging purposes, and also the poster with the stage names could be helpful.

Below you will find a couple of videos that you can show to your children as well. Then introduce the activities.

This pack offers three types of activities:

Extension Activities:

Invite them to spell the words using magnetic, wooden, or plastic letters.
Invite them to draw the different stages of the pumpkin life cycle.
Plant pumpkin seeds with your children.
Read books about pumpkins. You will find a list of some below.
Visit a pumpkin patch with your children and their families.
Serve Pumpkin Spice Cheerios for breakfast, Pumpkin Quesadillas, Pumpkin Crepes, or Pasta with Pumpkin Sauce during lunch, and Pumpkin Delights Cookies, Pumpkin Spice Rolls, or Nonni’s Pumpkin Spice Biscotti for a snack.
Present videos to support the teaching and learning process. A couple of good options you can use are “A Pumpkin Grows” and “The Life Cycle of a Pumpkin for Kids.”

Books about Pumpkins

Fill your library and the different centers with many books about pumpkins. If you don’t have many available, you can always find a lot at your local library or used bookstore. Of course, you can order them through my Amazon affiliate links by clicking the titles below.

How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamara. This book brings math and science concepts, reinforcing counting and estimation in a fun pumpkin-themed classroom experiment.

Pumpkin Circle: The Story of a Garden by George Levenson. This is a beautiful book for any child to explore the natural life cycle of a backyard pumpkin patch, from seeds sprouting to pumpkins growing.

Too Many Pumpkins! by Linda White. Filled with colorful illustrations from a gardening season, this beautiful book offers a wonderful lesson for preschoolers about helping others, using colorful illustrations.

Seed, Sprout, Pumpkin, Pie (Picture the Seasons) by Jill Esbaum. This beautifully photographed picture book uses lively text to take children on a learning journey from seed to sprout, picking up a pumpkin, carving it, and baking pumpkin pie.
