Native American Day is celebrated on September 25, and I think is a good opportunity to pay respect to the first habitants of this country by talking to your preschoolers about their culture and their stories while adding other educational activities like these FREE Native American Count & Clip Cards.
These Native American Count & Clip Cards will make practicing counting to 10 fun! You only need a few minutes to get this low-prep activity ready, and have your preschoolers play and learn!
This pack contains 30 cards distributed in five sheets with six cards each. You can get it at the end of this post.
Importance of Counting and Recognizing Numbers
Learning how to count is essential to help preschoolers progressively develop more complex numerical processing. Since knowing how to count to 10 is an abstract concept based on memorization, working on number recognition early will help children build their critical thinking skills and confidence.
In addition, using counting to combine and separate groups of objects will help them develop their other math skills such as adding, subtracting, estimating, calculating, and solving mathematical problems in the future.
How to Use These Native American Count and Clip Cards
These cards can be used in many ways such as:
- Small group activity
- Math center option
- Take-home game
- Quiet area option
To prepare this low-prep activity, simply download the file at the end of this post, print them in white cardstock, cut out the cards, and laminate them for durability. Then, give a child the cards and clothespins. The child needs to count the objects on each card and place the clothespin on top of the correct number.
These Native American Count & Clip cards will make a nice addition to your lesson plans, and help your preschoolers strengthen their counting, concentration, number recognition, and fine motor skills.
Extension Activities
To extend the activity you can:
- Add in manipulatives such as mini Native American figures, buttons, pom-poms, or any other materials, and have the children match each number with the same amount of objects.
- Have the children trace or copy the numbers using pencils, crayons, or markers.
- Match each number with plastic, wooden, or foam numbers.
