Your children will love this FREE Mother’s Day Memory Game which will help them put attention to details to recognize the pairs of cards, improve their visual discrimination and strengthen their concentration, and focus.  They will also improve the children’s memory when they remember where are the pairs of images to be able to combine them.

This Mother’s Day Memory Game will bring a lot of fun to your classroom, and friendly competition among your preschoolers.  It includes three pages nine cards each, and you can get it at the end of this post, so be sure to grab it.

If your preschoolers have been exposed to other memory games, they are probably going to be able to work independently. However, for new students or children who are not familiar with these types of games your guidance.

How to Prepare the Mother’s Day Memory Game

This game’s cards must be durable and strong, because the children will manipulate them in any kind of way, and you want them to last a long time.  Once you get them ready, you might want to place them in a small basket, a little box, or in a Zip-lock bag, so they can stay together and you don’t lose any of the cards.

To get this Mother’s Day Memory Game ready you will need these materials:

Begin by printing two sets of each page using white cardstock. Then cut out and laminate each of the tiles to protect them and make them last longer.  That way at the end of the month you can store the game in a pencil case or a Ziploc bag to protect it and use it year after year.

How to Play the Mother’s Day Memory Game

To start, lay out the cards face down in rows and columns so your preschoolers can only see the backside, and invite them to join you for a matching game!

Keep it super simple and start by playing like any traditional memory game, where children take turns selecting two cards to turn over trying to make a match. If a match is made then the preschooler gets to keep the set of cards. If not, then the cards have to be turned back over and the next preschooler takes the turn.

Extension Activities for the Game

These matching cards are so cute that you can use them for other learning games as well.  That way you not only take advantage of this resource and use it to plan different activities, which will make your life a little easier without having to prep for other activities but also will avoid your preschoolers becoming bored.

Some of the uses and activities you can do are:

Language Development: select one of the cards during circle time and invite your preschoolers to create a story using the picture, while you take dictation to make a class book.

Artwork: invite each preschooler to select a card and use it as an inspiration to draw or paint a picture.

The “The Missing Card” Game: this game is better as a small group activity.  Take 3 to 5 cards and place them on a table.  Ask your preschoolers to name the pictures on each card, then have your children close their eyes while you remove one card. Then ask your preschoolers to open their eyes and tell you which card is missing.

Mother’s Day Books

Don’t forget to switch your library and book baskets a little by adding Mother’s Day books.  Remember how important it is to read to your children every day, and having these books accessible to your preschoolers, will also encourage them to look at them, talk about the pictures, and try to identify some of the words.

Below are some of my favorites.  You can find them at your local library, used book store, and on Amazon.  The titles have my affiliate links embedded and can take you directly to the right page.

  • I Love You Forever by Robert Munsch.  This is my favorite Mother’s Day book.  Is the story of a mother that has a baby boy that she takes care of until is his turn to return the love.
  • Is Your Mama a Llama? By Deborah Guarino.  This book uses riddle rhymes and six lovable baby animals to help Lloyd the llama discover just what kind of animal his mama is.
  • Just Me and My Mom by Mercer Meyer.  Little Critter is spending a special day with his mom in this classic, funny, and heartwarming story.
  • The Night Before Mother’s Day” by Natasha Wing.  It’s the night before Mother’s Day, and Dad and the kids are determined to show Mom just how much they love her.
  • Are You My Mother? by P.D. Eastman, is the story of a baby bird who goes in search of his mother, but not knowing what she looks like makes it a challenge. The timeless message of the bond between mother and child makes this precious book a treasure.
  • Clifford’s Happy Mother’s Day by Norman Bridwell talks about how Emily Elizabeth is gathering together some surprises for her mom: candy, flowers, and a card she’ll make herself for Mother’s Day, and how Clifford accidentally knocks over the ink and tracks pawprints over the card and Emily’s sweater!
  • T. Rex and the Mother’s Day Hug by Lois G. Grambling.  Mother’s Day is here, and T. Rex wants to plan something extra special for his mama. He wants to do something instead of just giving something. T. Rex is sure he has a perfect gift idea, but will Mama Rex love it, too?
