This free math activity includes four pages with six cards each for 24 clip cards, and it can be downloaded at the end of this post.

The best way to teach any math area is by using fun, hands-on activities that keep children engaged and interested.  These clip cards are easy to use, and they will also help preschoolers develop their fine motor skills when they press the clothing pins to mark the correct shapes.

These Fishing Shapes Clip Cards can be used in many ways, such as:

  • Small group activity
  • Math center option
  • Take-home activity.
  • Quiet area option.

This activity is great for strengthening the children’s shape recognition and identification, fine motor, and one-to-one correspondence skills.

To prepare this activity, you will only need a handful of materials such as:

Print the clip cards on white cardstockCut them apart and laminate them for multiple uses. Place them on a tray or basket with some clothespins, and invite your preschoolers to join you to name the shape around the fish and find the matching black shape below.

It is better to introduce the clip cards to your preschoolers and show them how to use the cards, especially if they are unfamiliar with this type of activity. You can even use the cards during circle time to review the names of the shapes that appear in each card before you let them adventure on their own.

To extend the activity:

  • Have the children match the shapes in the cards with plastic, foam, or wood shapes.
  • Have the children trace the shapes with dry-erase markers or copy them on paper with pencils, crayons, or markers.
  • Combine it with my other free Father’s Day activities below.

It is always important to add some quality storybooks to enhance any preschool theme and to read them to your students during circle time and story time.  Here are some of my favorite Father’s Day and shape-related books that could be nicely paired with these clip cards.

They can be found at your local library, used books store, and on Amazon.  I’ve included my Amazon affiliate links to the titles, which can take you to the right page in seconds.
