World Farm Animal Day is October 2nd and these Farm Beginning Sounds Clip Cards are the perfect letter identification and beginning sounds activity for that day. It is also a good resource to add to your farm animals’ theme.
This free literacy activity includes four pages with six cards using real pictures for a total of 24 cards and can be downloaded at the end of this post.
The best way to teach the alphabet is by using fun hands-on activities, that keep children engaged and interested. These clip cards are easy to use and they also help preschoolers develop their fine motor skills when they press the clothespins to mark the correct letters.
When to Use the Farm Beginning Sounds Clip Cards
These Farm Beginning Sounds Clip Cards can be used in many ways such as:
- Small group activity
- Literacy center option
- Writing center activity
- Take-home activity.
- Quiet area option.
Give the child the cards and clothespins. The child needs to say the names of the objects in each card and place the clothespin on top of the correct letter that represents the sound.
This activity is great for strengthening the children’s phonemic awareness, literacy, letter recognition, fine motor, and one-to-one correspondence skills.
Materials Needed
- Farm Beginning Sounds Clip Cards (FREE at the end of this post).
- Clothespins.
- white cardstock.
- Laminator.
- Laminator pouches.
Optional: dry-erase markers, mini erasers, counters, buttons, or mini pompoms, for younger preschoolers who might find using the clothespins difficult. You don’t want them to feel frustrated to avoid doing the activity.
How to Set Up
Print the clip cards on white card stock. Cut them apart and laminate them for multiple uses. Place them on a tray or basket with some clothespins, and invite your preschoolers to join you in naming some of the pictures and finding the beginning sound letters.
I like to make several sets and place them in different centers, to entice the children and allow them to use this activity in different ways.
It is better to introduce the clip cards to your preschoolers and explain to them how to use the cards first.
To extend the activity you can:
- Have the children trace or copy the letters.
- Match each letter with plastic or foam letters.
Farm Storybooks
It is always important to add some quality storybooks to enhance any preschool theme, and to read them to your students during circle time and/or storytime.
