I’m happy to share these FREE Fall Colors Sorting Mats with you. This is a great sorting activity for preschoolers learning about fall colors. Unfortunately, we don’t see these beautiful colors here in Florida, but we still like to show pictures, add fall silk leaves in the centers, and plan different fall-related activities for our kids at school to enjoy them, at least that way.

This printable includes five sorting mats and five yellow, orange, red, green, and brown tile sheets.  You can grab it at the end of this post.

Benefits Of Sorting Activities

One of the things preschoolers enjoy the most is sorting. It has come naturally to them since they were younger. Sorting allows children to categorize objects and reflect on what is happening in their world.

This fall colors sorting activity is simple and educational and will help your preschoolers practice their:

  • Color recognition (identifying the color on the tile and the corresponding mat).
  • Fine motor, hand-eye coordination, and control (placing the tiles in the squares).
  • Concentration skills (focusing on the task).
  • One-to-one correspondence (matching the tiles with the appropriate mat).
  • Language development (talking about the colors and the objects in the tiles).

Fall Colors Sorting Mats

This sorting activity requires very little prep work. To prepare it, you need:

Print all the pages on white paper if you want to use this printable as a one-time activityCut out the tiles and have the children glue each tile to the appropriate mat.

If you want to reuse it, print it on white cardstock.  Then laminate everything or place the mats in dry-erase pockets, and cut out and laminate the tiles to have them available for years.

When you are done using the activity, store it on sheet protectors and place them in a binder to keep them safe.

Books About Colors

Fill your library and the different centers with many books about colors. If you don’t have many available, you can always find a lot at your local library or used bookstore.  Of course, you can order them through my Amazon affiliate links by clicking the titles below.

  • A Color on His Own by Leo Lionni tells the story of a chameleon who wants to remain one color forever by staying on the greenest leaf he can find, but in the autumn, the leaf changes, and so does him. When another chameleon suggests they travel together, he learns that companionship is more important than having a color of his own.
  • Mouse Paint by Ellen Stoll Walsh is a playful introduction to colors. Three white mice discover three jars of paint—red, blue, and yellow—and mix them to find new colors.
  • Mixed:  A Colorful Story by Arree Chung. A Yellow, a Blue, and a Never-before-seen color might save the day in this inspiring book about color, tolerance, and embracing differences.
  • How the Crayons Saved the Rainbow by Monika Sweeny is a cute story about a little box of crayons that began a journey to create rainbows to save the Earth from losing its colors.
  • Dr. Seuss’s Book of Colors Dr. Seuss teaches colors to young children using this author’s signature rhyming words and cute illustrations.
