If you are looking for an alphabet activity for your preschoolers to do on Easter week, this fun and pretty hands-on Easter Basket Letter Match activity will allow your preschoolers to work on letter recognition and matching uppercase and lowercase letters. This will help them develop the pre-reading skills necessary to learn how to read when they go to Kindergarten.
This is a great activity to strengthen the children’s concentration, letter knowledge, one-to-one correspondence, and creating sets skills.
Importance of Recognizing Letters
If a child doesn’t identify and name the letters and their sounds, it will not be possible to create the necessary base for him/her to start reading.
When a child can recognize and name the letters of the alphabet, that child can distinguish between uppercase and lowercase letters. After that, that child will start to be able to say the letter sounds, then put sounds together to make syllables, later words, and finally put words together to form phrases.
Getting The Activity Ready
This free printable can be used in many ways, such as small group activities, writing center options, take-home games, and Quiet area options.
It comes with five pages with baskets, one for each uppercase letter of the alphabet, and three pages with eggs, one for each lowercase letter. To prepare it, you will only need the following materials:
- Free Easter Basket Letter Match printable (found at the end of this post).
- printer
- White cardstock
- Laminator and Laminating pouches
- Scissors
- Small basket or Zip-lock bag
To prepare for the Easter Basket Letter Match activity, fill out the form below to download and print out the free printables. Print each page using white cardstock, then cut out and laminate the baskets and eggs to make them last longer. Place them in a small basket or a Ziploc bag to protect them.
This activity can be played individually or with a partner. To begin, your preschoolers gather the baskets and eggs and identify the letter on them as they match the uppercase letter in each basket with the lowercase letter in each egg.
If your kids are starting to learn the names of the letters, allow them to begin with just a few baskets and letters. Then you can have two or three more every time they play. When your kiddos know all the letter names, have them say each letter’s sound as they match baskets and eggs.
Other Ideas
- You can use this activity as a folder game. You just have to cut out the basket and paste it into a manila folder. Then, cut out the eggs and place them in an envelope or a Zip-lock bag to keep them safe.
- You can have the children match the letter with magnetic letters, which is another option for them to use.
- Prepare centers using this one and my other Easter activities. You can find them below.

You can find them at your local library, a used bookstore, or on Amazon. For your convenience, I added my affiliate links to each title.
