I love the colors and products that Fall brings in, the opportunity to harvest apple orchards and pumpkins, going on hay rides, and reading beautiful books. This free Counting Apples 0 – 10 printable for preschoolers go perfectly with this season, and its hands-on nature will help preschoolers practice their counting and fine motor skills.

This FREE printable includes 11 boxes with 0 to 10 apples, conveniently in black and white, to allow children to color the apples after they count them and write the number.  You can get it at the end of this post.

Importance of Counting and One-to-One Correspondence Skills

It is important that preschoolers understand math concepts to set the foundation for the development of their number and math skills in the future.  Also, when children develop a strong foundation in the number sense, they will be able to develop their problem-solving skills, which are extremely important for their future.

Now counting has to do with memorizing numbers in the correct order.  Many preschoolers can count to five, some up to 10, and a few can count to 20 or higher, but it is important that they match their counting abilities with their one-to-one correspondence skills.

One-to-one correspondence is the ability to match objects to the right number.  This means that children need to understand that they need to say “one” when they count one object, “two” when they count two objects, and so forth.

When both skills, counting, and one-to-one correspondence, work together, children have a better opportunity to develop those important skills, to set up a strong foundation for more complex mathematical operations in the future.

Counting Apples Activity

This activity is very easy to put together, and you will only need a handful of materials which are:

This printable offers you one page for each of the numbers 0 – 10.  If you want to use the activities for one-time use, you only need to print the selected page on regular printer paper.  If you want to use the pages multiple times, print them out in white cardstock and laminate them, or place them in dry-erase pockets.

Place the pages in your math center and invite your preschoolers to count the apples on each page aloud, write the correct number, and color the apples.  Offer them a variety of writing and coloring utensils.  That way your children will enjoy practicing their counting abilities, and will also keep them engaged and interested.  You can also have them match mini apples, erasers, pom poms, buttons, or chips to each apple, as they count.

You can also combine these activities with my Apple Shape Match and Apples Letter Tracing activities, to combine Literacy and Math, and give them more choices.

Books About Counting Apples

Read apple-related counting books with your children.  This activity will encourage them to see, hear and say numbers aloud, and count objects together.  Some suggestions I can give you are Ten Happy Apples by Artin Action, Five Little Apples by Yusuke Yunezu, Apple Pie Time by D. D. Glover, Mr. Bear’s Apple Tree: A Magical Counting Bookby A. J. Wood, Aria Picks Ten Apples by Crystal L. Gantt, Ten Red Apples by Pat Hutchins, Apple Tree, Apple Tree, What Do You See? by Sharon Rayford, Apple Countdown by Joan Holub, and Ten Apples Up on the Top! by Leo LeSieg.

You can find them at your local library, used book store, or on Amazon.  For your convenience, I added my direct Amazon links to the pictures.  If you like any, just click on it and it will take you directly to the site.
