If you looking for an alphabet activity for your preschoolers to do on Father’s Day week, this fun and pretty hands-on Father’s Day Fishing Letter Match activity will allow your preschoolers to work on letter recognition and matching uppercase and lowercase letters, which will help them develop pre-reading skills necessary to learn how to read when they go to Kindergarten.

This activity is great for strengthening the children’s concentration, letter knowledge, one-to-one correspondence, and creating sets skills.

Importance of Recognizing Letters

To be able to learn how to read, a child needs to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet, distinguishing between uppercase and lowercase letters.  Only then that child will be able to say the letter sounds, then put sounds together to make syllables, later words, and finally put words together to form phrases.  In other words, a child can’t read if he or she doesn’t know how the sounds the letter makes when they are together.

How To Prepare The Father’s Day Fishing Letter Match Activity

This free printable can be used as a small group activity, writing center option, take-home game, and Quiet area option.

It comes with five pages with fishing tools, one for each uppercase letter of the alphabet, and four pages with different color fish, one for each lowercase letter of the alphabet.

Materials needed:

To prepare for the Father’s Day Fishing Letter Match activity, fill out the form below to download and print out the free printables.  Print each page using white cardstock, then cut out and laminate the fishing tools and fish to make them last longer. Place them in a small basket or a Zip-lock bag, to protect them.

How To Use The Father’s Day Fishing Letter Match Activity

This activity can be played as individuals or with a partner.  To begin, your preschoolers gather the fishing tools and fish and identify the letter on it as they match the uppercase letter in each fishing tool with the lowercase letter in each fish.

If your kids are just starting to learn the names of the letters, let them start with just a few letter sets. Then you can then two or three more every time they play.

When your kiddos know all of the letter names, have them say the sound that each letter makes as they match the fishing tools and the fish.

Other Ideas

  • You can use this activity as a folder game.  You just have to cut out the fishing tools and paste them into a manila folder.  Then cut out the fish and place them in an envelope or a Zip-lock bag, to keep them safe.
  • You can have the children match the letter with foam or magnetic letters, to have another option for them to do.
