One of the families’ favorite activities during Summer is going to the beach, right? And when they go, children love to use pails and shovels and play in the sand. Inspire by this I created this low prep Beach Pail Letter Match, that can be used at home or in preschool centers like the one I run that don’t close during summer.
Summer is here and with this started the hurricane season, here in Florida. Regardless of this situation and the scare we all have every year, this season is for children to have fun, “recharge their batteries” and play outside and inside.
This activity is great to strengthen the children’s fine motor, eye, and hand coordination, concentration, letter knowledge, one-to-one correspondence, and creating sets skills.
Importance of Recognizing Letters
When a child has the ability to recognize and name the letters of the alphabet, that child can distinguish between upper case and lowercase letters. After that, that child will start to be able to say the letter sounds, then put sounds together to make syllables, later words, and finally put words together to form phrases.
Preparing The Beach Pail Letter Match Activity
This free printable can be used in many ways such as small group activities, literacy and writing centers, take-home game, and the Quiet area option.
It comes with eight pages with pails in three different colors, one for each uppercase letter of the alphabet, and five pages with coordinated pails, one for each lowercase letter of the alphabet.

How To Use The Beach Pail Letter Match Activity
This activity can be played individually or with a partner. To begin, your preschoolers gather the pails and shovels and identify the letter on them as they match the uppercase letter in each pail with the lowercase letter in each shovel.
If your kids are just starting to learn the names of the letters, let them start with just a few sets of pails and shovels. Then you can add two or three more every time they play.
When your kiddos know all of the letter names, have them say the sound that each letter makes as they match pails and shovels.
Other Ideas
- You can use this activity as a folder game. You only have to cut out the pails and paste them into a manila folder. Then cut out the shovels and place them in an envelope or a Ziploc bag, to keep them safe.
- You can have the children match the letter with magnetic, foam, or wooden letters, to have another option for them to do.
- Prepare centers using this activity and my other Summer activities such as the: Summer Count and Clip Cards, Summer Rhyming activity, and Summer Math Puzzles, to give children variety and choices.
Enhance Their Learning by Reading Books
If you have been on my site before, you may know how important I consider books. Reading is one of my favorite things, not just for myself, but also for my kiddos.
Gather fiction and non-fiction books about Summer to support the theme. There are many beautiful ones you can use, which could be found at your local library, in a used bookstore, or on Amazon. Below are some of my favorites. Clicking on the pictures will take you directly to Amazon, through my affiliate links.
